In the heart of man, there has always been a strong need to experience true love, to love and feel loved. But there is only one way to supply that need, and it is by knowing the only true love that can fill us and restore us. That love is the love of Jesus.
While Jesus was here on earth, he showed us the greatest love, which consisted of denying Himself and giving His life for us. That is why we, as His disciples, must follow His footsteps.
We must extend that love to those around us: our family, our spouse, and our children. Based on the book of Corinthians, chapter thirteen, I want to share some traits of true love and some tips that will will help you to live the fullness of that genuine love:
● IF YOU LOVE, YOU ARE NOT ILL TEMPERED
Has it ever happened to you that you get upset for anything? Everything irritates you? Or react more harshly in a situation than you thought you would? You have to evaluate what your temperamental weaknesses have been. As you increase in contact with the Word of God, and humble yourself in prayer, you will see those weaknesses transformed into strengths.
DO NOT ALLOW IMPATIENCE TO STEAL YOUR HAPPINESS. BE PATIENT AND PRACTICE THE SKILL OF LISTENING, OR EVEN OF REMAINING SILENT OR SPEAKING AT THE RIGHT TIME.
● IF YOU LOVE, YOU ARE PATIENT
True love is linked to patience, which requires calmness and tranquility to know how to wait. If you are married, you probably already know that your spouse has a different temperament than you. Because of those differences, you need to be patient (which is one of the fruits of the Spirit). This will help you build a home with harmony.
● IF YOU LOVE, YOU ARE KIND
The right words and attitudes are the foundation for a good relationship. Remember that your words must always motivate, edify, and comfort others. Being kind is about being a friend at all times, and being careful with your words. Avoid criticism, because this hurts the heart of those who are close to you and it brings separation.
● IF YOU LOVE, YOU DO NOT ENVY OR BOAST
Cultivate a generous soul and a heart that does not resent the achievements of others. Envy and pride are bondages that hinder you from advancing in every area of your life.
● IF YOU LOVE, YOU DO NOT DO ANYTHING INAPPROPRIATE
Stay alert to the traps of the enemy. Guard your emotions, persevere in your principles with God, and be a person of integrity in everything you do. Remember, love does not do anything inappropriate.
● IF YOU LOVE, YOU ARE NOT SELF-SEEKING
We find an example of this in the life of Joseph. His love for his family made him look after his brothers and his father, instead of looking after himself. He could have questioned his brothers about them selling him, he could have made them suffer, but instead he, being in a position of authority, made a decision to help them.
Love makes you think about doing good to others, and not only to think about yourself.
His love that is patient, respectful, giving, humble, correct, sincere, and happy. As you experience this love within yourself, you will be transformed and you will be able to share it with others. Then they will be changed by Him and their lives will grow to a new level of conquest and fullness.
